តើលោកស្រីជានរណា? លោកមកពីណា? ហើយអ្វីដែលជំរុញលោកស្រី ឱ្យចូលរួមការពារបរិស្ថានពីដំបូង?

ខ្ញុំឈ្មោះ វ៉ាណេសា។ ខ្ញុំមកពី ក្រុង El Escorial ដែលជាក្រុងដ៏តូចមួយនៅលើភ្នំ នៅខាងក្រៅទីក្រុង Madrid (ប្រទេសអេស្ប៉ាញ)។ ខ្ញុំមានចំណាប់អារម្មណ៍ទៅនឹងពពួកសត្វឆ្មា តាំងពីខ្ញុំនៅក្មេង ហើយនៅអាយុ 12 ឆ្នាំ ខ្ញុំបានឃើញរូប ខ្លារពពក នៅក្នុងសៀវភៅមួយក្បាល  ហើយបានសម្រេចចិត្ត​ថា  វានឹងក្លាយជាអ្វីដែលខ្ញុំនឹងធ្វើជាមួយជីវិតរបស់ខ្ញុំ នោះគឺ៖ ធ្វើជាអ្នកស៊ើបអង្កេត និងការពារពពួកឆ្មាព្រៃដ៏កម្រ នៅអាស៊ីអាគ្នេយ៍។ ខ្ញុំជាសកម្មជនធម្មជាតិកាលពីខ្ញុំនៅវ័យជំទង់  បន្ទាប់មកខ្ញុំបានសិក្សាផ្នែកជីវវិទ្យា និងសត្វសាស្ត្រ នៅចក្រភពអង់គ្លេស ហើយទទួលបានអនុបណ្ឌិតផ្នែកអភិរក្ស នៅប្រទេសអេស្ប៉ាញវិញ។

Who are you, where are you from, and what first inspired you to get involved in protecting the environment?

My name is Vanessa. I’m from El Escorial, a small town in the mountains outside Madrid (Spain). I was fascinated by cats since I was very young, and at age 12 I saw the Clouded Leopard in a book and decided that was going to be what I would do with my life: investigate and protect the rare wild cats of Southeast Asia. I was a nature activist during my teenage years, then I studied Biology and Zoology in the UK and got a Master in Conservation back in Spain. Currently I’m finishing my PhD on the Fishing Cat in Cambodia.

What is the the Cambodian Fishing Cat Project and why did you decide to launch this work?

I came to Cambodia in 2014 to work at the Center for Biodiversity Conservation of the Royal University of Phnom Pehn and Flora and Fauna International. With the CBC, researcher Ret Thaung led a project to search for Fishing Cats around the country and we found them! After that, I started the Cambodian Fishing Cat Project with graduates from the CBC to study and protect the species in the magnificent Cambodian wetlands. Now we are the Fishing Cat Ecological Enterprise, with an amazing team, working in several parts of the country, and not just trying to find Fishing Cats but also working on climate change adaptation, habitat restoration and ecotourism.

សត្វខ្លាត្រី (Prionailurus viverrinus) គឺជាពពួកឆ្មាព្រៃដ៏កម្រមួយប្រភេទ ដែលចូលចិត្តរស់នៅ ក្នុងទឹក។ ពពួកសត្វខ្លាត្រីនេះ មានទំហំមធ្យម (ចន្លោះ 10-15 គីឡូក្រាម) ជាមួយនឹងជំនាញពិសេស លើការសម្របខ្លួនទៅនឹងទីជម្រកដីសើមរបស់ពួកវា។ សត្វនេះ មានរោមស្រោបពីរជាន់ ដើម្បីរក្សាខ្លួនវា ឱ្យស្ងួត មានជើងដែលអាចហែលទឹកបានយ៉ាងល្អ​ រាងកាយរឹងមាំ មានជើងខ្លី និងកន្ទុយខ្លី ដែលពួកគេប្រើជា "ចង្កូត" ។ ខ្លាត្រីនេះគឺជាប្រភេទឆ្មាតែមួយគត់ ក្រៅពី  ខ្លាឈីថាហ៍ (c ដែលមានក្រញ៉ាំ ដែលជួយឱ្យវារក្សាជើងយ៉ាងរឹងមាំនៅលើភក់ និង ជាទំពក់ចាប់ត្រី។ ក្នុងអំឡុងពេលនៃការស្ទង់មតិរបស់ CBC យើងក៏ទទួលបានវីដេអូដ៏អស្ចារ្យមួយ​បង្ហាញពីការទំនាក់ទំនង រវាងពពួកខ្លាត្រីដូចជា ៖ ពេលខ្លាត្រីឈ្មោលធ្វើកាយវិការ "រាំ" គឺដើម្បីបន្សល់ស្លាកស្នាមគីមីជាមួយជើងរបស់វានៅលើដី ហើយខ្លាត្រីញី បានស្រូបក្លិន និងលិទ្ធស្រទាប់ខាងក្រោមដើម្បីទទួលបានសារ។

What is the fishing cat and what makes it so special?

The Fishing Cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) is a rare water-loving wildcat. Fishing cats are medium sized felines (10-15 kg) with specialized adaptations to their wetland habitats. They have double-coated fur to keep them dry, semi-webbed feed to swim better, a strong, stocky body, short legs, and a short tail they use as “rudder”. The Fishing Cat is the only cat, other than the Cheetah, that has semi-retractable claws which help it keep a firm footing on mud and hook fish. During the CBC survey we also got amazing footage of Fishing Cat communication: a male Fishing Cat “dancing” to leave chemical marks with his feet on the ground, and a female sniffs and licks the substrate to get the message.

Fishing Cats live in South and Southeast Asia, but records are very scarce in this region.

យើងកំពុងធ្វើការនៅកន្លែងជាច្រើននៅក្នុងព្រៃកោងកាងតាមតំបន់ឆ្នេរ ស្វែងរក ខ្លាត្រី ដោយប្រើកាមេរ៉ា និងសហការជាមួយក្រសួងបរិស្ថាន និងសហគមន៍មូលដ្ឋាន ដើម្បីការពារជម្រក ដ៏អស្ចារ្យទាំងនេះ និងបញ្ឈប់ការបរបាញ់។ កាល​ពី​ប៉ុន្មាន​ឆ្នាំ​មុន ខ្លាត្រីដ៏​ធំ​មួយ​ក្បាល(១៧​គីឡូក្រាម) ត្រូវ​បាន​គេ​រិបអូស​នៅ​តូប​លក់​សាច់​ជ្រូក​ក្បែរ​បឹង​ទន្លេសាប។ អស់រយៈពេល 3 ឆ្នាំចុងក្រោយនេះ យើងបានស្វែងរកខ្លាត្រី នៅក្នុងព្រៃលិចទឹកបឹងទន្លេសាប ហើយថ្មីៗនេះ មន្ត្រីឧទ្យានុរក្ស នៃមន្ទីរបរិស្ថានថតបាន រូបថតជាលើកដំបូងដែលមិនធ្លាប់មាន អំពីសត្វខ្លាត្រីនៅជុំវិញ បឹងទន្លេសាប!

What are the greatest threats to this cat in Cambodia and what are you doing to protect it?

Fishing Cats in Cambodia must have been quite common in the past. There is even a carving in Angkor’s Bayon temple that shows fishing boats, fish, crocodiles and a cat with short legs and a short tail, which is undoubtedly a Fishing Cat! Everyone knows it’s name in Khmer: “Kla Trey” or Fishing Tiger but nowadays most people confuse it with the much smaller Leopard Cat (Prionailurus bengalensis). I believe that in the past Fishing Cats in Cambodia must have come into conflict with fishers because of competition for fish and raiding fishing nets, which together with that association with the Tiger (“Kla”) may have seen many cats killed in retaliation and fear. However, in recent times the destruction of their wetland habitats such as mangroves and flooded forests, and specially poaching for wildlife meat are the biggest threats to the very few Fishing Cats left in Cambodia.

We are working at several sites in the mangroves along the coast searching for Fishing Cats with camera-traps and collaborating with the Ministry of Environment and the local communities to protect these amazing habitats and stop poaching. 

A few years ago, a big Fishing Cat (17kg!) was confiscated at a bushmeat stall near the Tonle Sap lake. For the last three years we’ve been searching for Fishing Cats in the Tonle Sap flooded forests and recently a MoE ranger got the first photo ever of a Fishing Cat around the lake!

What is next for the Cambodian Fishing Cat Project?

Last year we also started looking for Fishing Cats along the Mekong river in Stung Treng, and there are other wetlands in Cambodia we still need to investigate...turns out Fishing Cats are very good at hiding in very remote and inaccessible areas. We’ll continue working to learn more about the Fishing Cat populations in Cambodia, and collaborating with partners, government and local communities to ensure their survival and the conservation of their incredibly beautiful wetland habitats.

What can regular Cambodians do to help support your work?

The most important thing Cambodians can do for Fishing Cats and many other amazing animals in Cambodia is to never eat wildlife meat (which is also the reason why zoonotic diseases like Covid-19 arise), tell everyone they know, especially in rural areas to stop hunting animals, and if they ever hear about it, to report it straight away.
